Three songs I love: When I need to smile

JJ

As I type this, it's blizzarding outside. Like straight up shelling out ugly blasts of snow, cold, and wind. Drifts are accumulating at this very moment that I will need to shovel. Because of the wind, I've been awake since 1:30 a.m. I need a pick me up!

If you know me at all, you know what this means. That's right. Let's crank up some tunes and dance, my beautiful friends. So here are three songs that always make me smile...

Hello, by Dragonette

This EDM wonder is always a fun listen. There is a reason this song leads our hype playlist when our family goes for a hike. Dragonette was a Canadian group that dealt mainly with electronic sounds in the early 2000s. Martina Sorbara continues to use the name as a solo act after the rest left the band in the mid-2010's. Released in 2010 "Hello" has reached platinum certification in Canada, Australia, the U.S., Britian, and Belgian. The song was brought back into the current conversation by underscoring almost an entire episode of Ted Lasso ("Beard After Hours", season 2, episode 9).

Little Dance, by Neon Dreams

This upbeat little ditty by Canadian duo Neon Dreams always makes me smile. Since it was released in 2022, this song has consistently topped my playlists. With lyrics that urge the listener to savour every step of their own little dance in life, this song is uplifting and chill. There's a colourful video to go with it, in case you need the visuals to enjoy your vibe. Fun fact: I got to experience this song live with my daughter at the Axis Club in Toronto and it did not disappoint.

Dynamite, by BTS

Okay, okay, it's an obvious choice, for me. I mean J-Hope even said this song was released to give some joy to BTS fans during the bleak days of the COVID pandemic. Still, it's notable to me, because well, it wasn't supposed to happen. BTS had rounded off their catalogue with the masterpiece that was Map of the Soul 7, and a massive global tour was planned. Then COVID happened. And everything came to a full-stop. Wanting to cheer up their fans (and themselves), they dropped this irresistible English-language tune with flavours of disco. It debuted at number one on Billboard's Hot 100. After that BTS's popularity rose to heights no one could have fathomed.
